Howanut Road is the primary east-west thoroughfare on the Chehalis Reservation and used extensively by hundreds of individuals who live on the reservation. The narrow bridge had long been problematic and was damaged in late 2019 and had been reduced to a single lane for much of 2020. This project removed and replaced the failing bridge with an innovative, modular “Fast Cast Bridge” system, which was installed in only a day. The project also included removal of soil that was contaminated with leached creosote, and widening the current pathway. Work elements for this project included temporary erosions control, clearing and grubbing, excavation, paving, pavement markings, sign installation, and traffic control.
